Training officers how to use the new software in your department can be overwhelming.
Changing what we already know works?! Are you crazy?
One way to ensure a smooth implementation is teaching your officers properly.
Direct Instruction is the most standard way of teaching.
It is simple yet effective and can be great for teaching new police software.
Direct Instruction consists of 3 phases that can be broken down into the following:
- I Do
- We Do
- You Do
The First Phase
The “I Do” is a teacher directly modeling for students the task that needs to be learned. A teacher will most likely employ “think
The Second Phase
The “We Do” is when peers have an opportunity to practice the newly learned task together in pairs or groups.
An important aspect of this stage is that the collaborating pairs have easy access to request teacher assistance as they attempt their first try at this new task.
You will circulate to ensure each pair is on the right track and provide feedback as necessary.
The Third and Final Phase
The “You Do” is also known as independent practice.
This is when students do not have access to other students for help.
They are discouraged to ask a teacher for assistance; however, to avoid frustration, you can provide guided questions to help students that may not be ready for independent practice.
Independent practice can occur in the actual physical classroom or it can happen away from the classroom in the form of homework.
Adult learners are understandably different than traditional school-aged children. They are intrinsically motivated to learn new tasks and are inherently independent thinkers.
After research into Adult Learning psychology and teaching styles, we understood that training police would require a mixture of these two phases- the We Do and the You Do.
